Editorial: Interprofessional Education in the Age of Risk and Innovation

In July 2018, over 400 health professionals gathered in Minneapolis, MN to attend the Nexus Summit, “Creating Results: Interprofessional Vision to Action.” In her plenary address, Barbara Brandt, Director of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, spoke about the seismic shifts occurring in health care and health professions education and the importance of asking the right questions. This editorial provides a synopsis of Brandt’s address and raises questions for  nurse educators.

A Relational View of Hospital and Post-acute Staff Communication and Adherence to Evidence-based Transitional Care

This descriptive research used social network analysis to explore the influence of relationships and communication among hospital nursing (RN, LPN, CNA) and discharge planning staff on adherence to evidence-based practices (EBP) for reducing preventable hospital readmissions. Although previous studies have shown that nurses are a valued source of research information for each other, there have been few studies concerning the role that staff relationships and communication play in adherence to evidence-based practice.

How Accurately Do ICU Providers Using An Electronic Health Record Communicate Patient Data During Daily Inter-Professional Patient Care Rounds?

RATIONALE: Accurate data communication during daily patient care rounds is essential yet challenging in the data-dense intensive care unit (ICU) environment. The electronic health record (EHR) is a data management tool utilized in many ICUs yet its impact on data communication during rounds is uncertain. Our previous work showed that ICU providers preparing for rounds extract only 78% of available 24-hour lab data from the EHR and accurately communicate only 61% of this information during rounds.
